A while back I posted the lyrics to a an old hymn and while I can't say for sure, it appeared to me that many people thought I was quoting a passage of Scripture. I didn't have the heart to say otherwise because hymns have so fallen out of fashion that I feared some people wouldn't continue reading. The response was incredible. People were so ministered to by those lyrics that it generated many comments. By the way, hymns are just as Biblical as spiritual songs (what some of us now call modern praise & worship).
Ephesians 5:19 (NIV) Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
This really isn't a blog about music. I'm trying make a point. Most all of us are currently dealing with issues that are way out of our league. Life happens like that. The older we get the more complicated things become. The really good thing about being a believer in the finished work of Jesus is that He is still here to walk with us and He has written many Promises to us. Unlike us humans, God never forgets or reneges on His Promises.
I have a few recommendations for you.
- Turn everything off except the computer you're using to read this. That includes your phone and especially your mobile phone. On that same computer, close out everything else except this page. The point is to get quiet before the Lord so you can hear His small still voice.
- Read the following lyrics to the hymn Standing on the Promises.
- Then, continue praying the Scriptures that follow. God wants us to remind Him of His Promises that never fail. He wants us to believe them. He wants to increase our faith.
- Instead of looking around the web for the latest "prophet" to give you a word, allow God Himself through His inerrant Word to speak to you directly.
- After prayerfully meditating on the Scriptures below, blow the dust off of your Bible and keep searching out His Promises on your own.
Standing on the Promises
Russell K. Carter, pub 1886
Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I'm standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love's strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword,
Standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List'ning every moment to the Spirit's call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.
Following is just a handful of God's Promises to get you started. When you prayerfully meditate on them, believe that God is speaking directly to you. He loves you.
